Tomoe Gozen

Tomoe Gozen is a rare and famous example of onna-bugeisha, a female of the buke class in feudal Japan following the bushido.

She was a samurai during the time of the Genpei War (1180–1185), and held a high rank in battle.

Portrayed in Heike Monogatari as a beautiful women, she was also said to be gifted for the bow as well as the sword, mounted or on foot.
